SJF Hiring for Three New Positions

SJF Ventures is hiring for three new positions: an associate based in its Durham office; a senior analyst based in its San Francisco office; and an analyst, portfolio acceleration based in either its New York or Durham office. Associate Position (Durham, NC):

SJF Ventures is recruiting an associate or senior analyst to join its investment team. This position is suited for talented, experienced and mission-driven individuals who are eager to develop skills in venture capital and impact investing. SJF has a horizontal culture in which team members at all levels are involved in investment decisions and portfolio management.

The new team member will be based in SJF’s Durham office and will work with multiple members of SJF’s investment team. Representative responsibilities will include:

– Identifying investment prospects through networking and research at industry events, with a focus on climate tech, energy and mobility, supply chain and circular economy, and food sectors.

– Reviewing company presentations, performing due diligence on prospect companies, researching industries and competitors, and building and reviewing financial models.

– Supporting portfolio companies in business development and strategy, financing, recruitment, exit events and impact initiatives.

– Supporting SJF’s operational activities including impact acceleration, marketing, investor relations and fund administration.

Desired Qualifications:

– Deep interest and passion in addressing climate change and environmental challenges.

– Exceptional analytical abilities, which have been demonstrated through work and/or academic accomplishments.

– Demonstrated interest in sustainability, clean energy, venture capital and impact investing.

– Initiative, creativity and ability to work independently.

– Robust financial modeling skills.

– Two to six years of experience in a relevant field, such as an operating role in an entrepreneurial company or work in venture capital, private equity, investment banking or management consulting.

– Graduate degree not required. Undergraduate studies in engineering, sustainability, finance or business preferred.

– Background and experience that enhance diversity of perspectives at SJF Ventures.

– Aptitude and personality to work well within SJF’s culture with flexibility, humility, commitment and humor.

Senior Analyst Position (San Francisco, CA):

SJF is seeking a senior analyst. This position is suited for talented and experienced individuals who are eager to develop skills in venture capital and impact investing. SJF promotes a horizontal culture in which individuals at all levels are integrated into the venture capital process.

The individual will be located in San Francisco Bay Area office and will work with SJF team members across multiple offices. Representative responsibilities will include:

– Identifying investment prospects through networking and research.

– Performing due diligence on prospect companies, including reviewing company presentations, researching industries and competitors, and building and reviewing financial models.

– Supporting portfolio companies in business development and strategy, financing, recruitment, exit events and impact acceleration initiatives.

– Supporting SJF’s operational activities, including marketing and fund administration.

Desired Qualifications:

– Interest in networking to source potential investment opportunities.

– Exceptional analytical abilities, which have been demonstrated through work and/or academic accomplishments.

– Initiative and ability to work independently.

– Experience in a relevant field, including venture capital, private equity, investment banking, entrepreneurship, management consulting or operating companies. Graduate school degree not required.

– Financial modeling skills.

– Background and experience that enhance diversity of perspectives at SJF Ventures.

– Interest in developing impact venture capital skills rapidly in a position that is designed to last two to three years. (Longer-term roles may be considered based on circumstances at the time.)

Analyst, Portfolio Acceleration Position (New York, NY or Durham, NC):

SJF Ventures is looking for an analyst, portfolio acceleration to join its team in its New York or Durham office to support the firm’s diverse array of portfolio and impact acceleration initiatives. This individual will report to SJF’s director, portfolio acceleration as well as work with the broader investment team.

Representative responsibilities will include:

– Assisting in portfolio-wide support to drive positive company performance in areas like marketing and sales, recruiting, employee engagement and public relations.

– Helping to organize and manage SJF’s impact data collection process with active portfolio companies. This work includes finalizing metrics, analyzing submitted information, managing SJF’s impact dashboard, identifying impact initiatives, reporting on impacts achieved and completing LP reporting requests in partnership with the SJF team.

– Authoring impact reports and case studies that highlight SJF portfolio companies.

– Helping SJF design and manage collaborative impact acceleration projects with portfolio companies. These ‘bending the curve’ initiatives will include 2-4 larger projects per year, in addition to lighter-touch, ongoing support to portfolio companies. Responsibilities will also include a focus on collaborating with companies on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices and efforts.

– Supporting SJF’s marketing efforts to build awareness of SJF and its portfolio to drive deal flow, portfolio success and a recognition of positive impact business models. This work includes establishing new relationships with reporters, enhancing SJF’s social media and press presence, authoring quarterly SJF newsletter bulletins, adding news articles to the SJF website and aiding portfolio companies on PR efforts.

– Assisting in finance and administrative tasks for effective fund operations. These will include support in the quarterly reporting process for SJF Limited Partners, ongoing investor relations work and preparatory work for SJF’s sixth fund.

– Helping advance research and public policy initiatives relevant to SJF’s mission and portfolio companies. These efforts may include broader collaborative work with industry associations like the Impact Capital Managers network.

Desired Qualifications:

– Degree(s) with relevant studies, service and internships.

– One to three years of experience in relevant fields, including impact investing, venture capital, private equity, investor relations, management consulting, public-sector or non-profit work, impact investing industry-oriented associations or organizations, entrepreneurial assistance or start-up companies in SJF’s sectors of focus.

– Exceptional analytical, writing and communication abilities, which have been demonstrated through work, publications, service and academic and career accomplishments.

– Interest in building a career in deepening and broadening the positive societal and environmental results from impact investing.

– Self-starter, able to initiate projects and work independently.

– Strong project management skills.
