We are passionate about generating extraordinary results, creating positive changes, and partnering with visionaries who combine these two. Our team has invested in over 80 ventures, bringing time-tested perspective and expertise to partnerships with entrepreneurs. We are ready and eager to build something special together.
Meet Our Team
Joey Barrick
Joey Barrick is a Senior Associate based in SJF’s North Carolina office. Joey previously worked as an investment banking associate at Moelis & Company, an independent M&A, restructuring, and strategic advisory firm. Prior to Moelis & Company, Joey was an electrical engineer for Enercon Services, where he led the design, implementation, and commissioning of engineering projects at utility sites across the Southeast.
Joey holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business with concentrations in entrepreneurship and finance and also graduated with highest honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in Electrical Engineering.
Perry Clarkson
Perry Clarkson is a Partner based in SJF Ventures’ New York office. Perry previously worked on the Investments team at Roivant Sciences, focused on identifying and transacting on intriguing preclinical and clinical stage therapeutic programs. Prior to Roivant, Perry was an Associate at Longitude Capital, a life sciences-focused venture capital fund, as well as an investment banking analyst at Barclays, focused primarily on healthcare M&A transactions.
Perry graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Economics (concentration in Finance) from the Wharton School as well as a Bachelor of Applied Science (major in Biomedical Science) from the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Rick Defieux
Rick Defieux, the Chair of SJF’s Investment Committee and co-founder of SJF, has been a venture capitalist for over 30 years. From 2009 to 2015, Rick was also an advisor to Battelle and Battelle company 360ip, where he managed the investment activities of two venture funds in Asia. Previously, Defieux was a General Partner of five US-based venture capital funds, including Edison I, II and III, where he devised and led the firm’s environmental and energy investing program and shared responsibility for communications investments. He received a Cleantech Pioneer award in 2003 from the Cleantech Group. Prior to venture capital, Rick was a Senior Scientist and Division Manager at Environmental Research & Technology Inc (ERT), then a leading environmental consulting and engineering services firm. Rick has an MBA from Columbia University and a BA and MA from Boston University.
Dan Geballe
Dan Geballe is a Managing Director in the California office of SJF Ventures. Dan has worked on SJF’s investments in Carrum Health, City Innovate, Easy Metrics, Graphika, Jopwell (acquired by True Search), LeadGenius, Nextracker (acquired by FLEX), Portfolium (acquired by Instructure), Respondology, SeamlessDocs (acquired by Kofile), ShipMonk, Voltaiq, Waycare Technologies (acquired by Rekor Systems), and Yieldbot. Prior to SJF, Dan worked for DBL Investors as a summer associate, Corporation for Enterprise Development, and Fisher Investments.
Dan has a Bachelor’s Degree in anthropology and Master’s Degree in environmental management from Yale University and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dan is also on the Board of the Levi Strauss Foundation, where he serves as Vice President and Chair of the Finance Committee.
David Griest
David Griest is a Managing Director at SJF Ventures and based in Seattle. He joined SJF in 2004 and leads investments in supply chain, circular economy, food/tech, and tech-enabled services. David’s investments include SJF portfolio companies Aseptia (sustainable food processing technology), BioSurplus (pre-owned laboratory equipment), HYLA (mobile device trade-in and reuse solutions), Intechra (electronics reuse and recycling), Iron Sheepdog (short haul logistics platform), Lineage Logistics (cold chain storage and logistics), Mercado (first mile import supply chain), Novinium (power cable rejuvenation and reuse), Optoro (customer returns optimization platform), Perishable Shipping Solutions (cold chain ecommerce fulfillment), Rustic Crust (all-natural and organic pizza products), Salvage Direct (salvage vehicle auction platform), ShipMonk (ecommerce fulfillment & inventory management), Telkore (wireless infrastructure services), and Tive (supply chain visibility).
David was previously with Croft & Bender, an investment bank in Atlanta that provides venture capital, M&A and other financial advisory services for middle market and emerging growth companies in the Southeast. He also assisted with C&B Capital, a co-investment fund managed by Croft & Bender.
David has an MBA from the Yale School of Management and a BBA in Finance from the University of Georgia. In his spare time, David enjoys slow walks up steep hills at high altitude including the 50 state highpoints, South America, and Antarctica.
Kelsey Jarrett
Kelsey Jarrett is SJF Ventures’ Director of Impact, based in the New York office. Previously, Kelsey served as a Vice President at Malk Partners, a leading ESG and impact consultancy, where she advised Growth Equity and Venture Capital firms on their ESG and impact strategies. Prior to Malk, Kelsey worked at impact measurement firm 60 Decibels in London and began her career in Washington D.C. as a political and advocacy digital strategist, including as a Political Partnerships Analyst at Google.
Kelsey holds a B.S. in Human and Organizational Development from Vanderbilt University and an M.P.A. from the London School of Economics, specializing in social impact innovation.
Arrun Kapoor
Arrun Kapoor is the Managing Director for SJF Ventures’ New York City office. He has been involved as a Board Director or Observer of Elemeno Health, Rhithm, SchooLinks, Springboard, Catalant, Interplay Learning, Jopwell, Voxy, Portfolium, Civitas Learning, RaiseMe, Think Through Learning, FieldView Solutions, ServiceChannel, Truist, and Ayla Networks. Arrun leads the NYC EdLinks program, is a member of the Investment Board of the Social Venture Fund for The Tamer Center for Social Enterprise at Columbia Business School, and was on the Advisory Board for the University of Texas System, Institute for Transformational Learning.
Arrun was most recently with Bain & Company in London and Delhi, where he launched the firm’s internal green practice initiatives. He worked with Bain’s private equity consulting practice and gained experience in a range of industries. Prior to Bain, he was an early employee and Manager with Eurasia Group, a successful political risk consulting business in New York and London. Arrun holds a master’s degree in International Political Economics from the London School of Economics and completed a BA from New York University with an economics and business focus.
Alan Kelley
Alan Kelley is a Managing Director in SJF Ventures’ California office. He has led or co-led investments for SJF in Carrum Health, Cooks Venture, Easy Metrics, Elemeno Health, LeadGenius, MediaMath, MedPage Today, Preclick, Revalue Nature, Ryla Teleservices, ServiceChannel, Vital Farms and Yieldbot.
Prior to joining SJF Ventures, Alan worked primarily in investment management. He conceived, developed and managed Trusco Capital Management’s first Internet and technology mutual fund, which ranked in the top quintile of the Lipper Science and Technology Funds Universe.
Alan received a B.A. in Public Policy from Duke University in 1991. He earned his M.B.A. from the Goizueta Business School’s Evening Program at Emory University in 1999.
Dave Kirkpatrick
Dave Kirkpatrick is a Managing Director and co-founder of SJF Ventures, which focuses on high growth, positive impact ventures. Dave helped lead SJF’s capitalization of five funds totaling $435 million starting in 1999. Dave’s portfolio engagements include Ambient Fuels, Terabase Energy, PosiGen, ROOM, Voltaiq, Living Earth, and ENTOUCH, as well as exited companies Community Energy, TransLoc, Nextracker, groSolar, CleanScapes, B.B Hobbs, Waycare, and Foxfire. Dave’s industry focus areas include climate tech, solar energy, energy efficiency, recycling & reuse, and mobility. Dave was the founding co-chair of the Impact Capital Managers, a network of private capital fund managers in the U.S. and Canada investing for financial returns and impact.
Prior to SJF, Dave founded and managed KirkWorks, a cleantech investment research firm; and SunShares, a solar energy and recycling company. Dave was named the 2005 CDVC Practitioner of the Year by the Community Development Venture Capital Alliance and Recycler of the Year in 1996 by the National Recycling Coalition.
Dave is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Business at the Columbia Business School and co-teaches a climate tech course. Dave earned a BA in Physics and History from Duke University in 1982 and an MBA from UNC Kenan Flagler Business School (KFBS) in 1991. He was named 2023 Impact Leader Award by Impact Capital Managers and the KFBS Executive MBA Alumnus of the Year in 2010. He enjoys gardening, kayaking and trying to learn Spanish.
Jackie Lipkin
Jackie Lipkin is a Partner based in SJF’s North Carolina office. Jackie’s portfolio engagements include Iron Sheepdog, Lineage Logistics, Living Earth, Mercado Labs, Perishable Shipping Solutions, TemperPack, and Tive. Jackie previously worked in finance for Schoology, a high-growth education technology company. Prior to Schoology, Jackie was an investment banking analyst for Centerview Partners, an independent M&A, restructuring, and strategic advisory firm.
Jackie graduated magna cum laude from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Economics and concentrations in Finance and Management. Jackie also served as the treasurer for the Junior Board of Girls Inc of NYC.
Cody Nystrom
Cody Nystrom is a Managing Director at SJF Ventures. She joined SJF in the Durham, North Carolina office in 2007 and leads SJF’s health and wellness investment practice. Cody currently represents SJF on the boards of ChartSpan (chronic care management), Ellipsis Health (mental health AI), Take Command Health (health reimbursement software), TemperPack (sustainable thermal packaging solutions), Solera Health (virtual health network), Validic (personalized health data platform), and Cecelia Health (virtual specialty clinic). Cody previously represented SJF on the boards of Versify Solutions, Community Energy, Inc., Vital Farms, PierianDx, mPulse and CleanScapes. Cody was previously at Ewing Bemiss & Co., an investment bank based in Richmond, Virginia that provides M&A and other financial advisory services to middle-market companies. Cody graduated summa cum laude from the University of Virginia with a BS in Systems and Information Engineering.
Conrad Pentaleri
Conrad Pentaleri is a Senior Analyst based in SJF’s North Carolina office. Conrad previously worked as a project finance analyst for CleanCapital, an independent power producer focused on distributed solar and storage investments. Conrad’s portfolio engagements to date include Iron Sheepdog.
Conrad graduated with Excellence in Sustainability Honors from the University of Michigan, receiving a BBA from the Ross School of Business. While at Michigan, Conrad interned for BlueWave Solar, PwC and Perch Energy.
Julie Plowden
Julie is SJF Ventures’ Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer, based in the North Carolina office. Julie also provides outsourced financial and back-office services to clean energy investment firm Double Time Capital. She is a former Director of Finance for Parish Capital Advisors (sold to the StepStone Group), a private equity fund of funds with over $2 billion of assets under management, where she oversaw back-office administration, accounting, and reporting. Earlier in her career, she served as a Senior Tax Manager for Ernst & Young LLP, where she focused on real estate and venture capital. Julie is a CPA and a graduate of Clemson University.
Elizabeth Roberts
Elizabeth Roberts is a Senior Analyst based in SJF’s New York office. Elizabeth previously worked at Aegis Ventures, a healthcare-focused venture studio. Prior to Aegis, Elizabeth was an associate consultant at Bain & Company, with substantial involvement in both Bain’s private equity practice and non-profit work.
Elizabeth graduated with high distinction from the University of Toronto, receiving an H.BSc. in Global Health and Immunology, having published several papers on healthcare quality and accessibility.
Anna Rumer
Anna Rumer is an Associate, Portfolio Acceleration based in SJF Ventures’ New York office. Prior to joining SJF, Anna worked at the Gartner Research Board, a thinktank focused on business and technology strategy, where she conducted in-depth research projects on topics including data ethics, machine learning, and digital transformation. Anna holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Chicago, both with a focus on climate policy. While at UChicago, she completed internships at JetBlue, a Shark Tank-featured startup called LuminAID, Time Magazine, and on Capitol Hill working for Senator Chris Murphy.
